Worked with a client the other day who had to go to a cocktail party as part of work. She wasn’t confident on handling cocktail parties.
And now it was a part of her job description.
Love them or hate them, they can be a useful tool to network, to meet new people and expand your circle.
That said, I must confess that “Cocktail Parties” were one of my own personal fears in life. Speak in public? No problem. Go to a party where you don’t know anyone? I’d rather go to a dentist and get my teeth drilled on .
First thing I recommended was the book Super Flirt by Tracy Cox. In fact I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know body language secrets. It also has great ideas on how to handle such situations as cocktail parties.
Second thing we did was to look to see if there was anything in this persons past that might be causing her present angst. And there was. The emotional trauma of being the new kid in school in the middle of a school year was still present in her body.
And how did she handle this early trauma of being the outsider in a building full of strangers? Avoidance. Avoid any situation like this at all costs.
Using the various tools we have, we not only identified why she was this way, but more importantly, removed the old memory’s power to control her.
And that is the power of emotional healing. You can change your traumas into your strengths!
