Acres of Diamonds

There is a book called Acres of Diamonds.  It is all about how a man sold everything he owned to go look for diamonds.  Turns out his farm on the Indus River had one of the most prolific sources of diamonds  yet to be  discovered.  And the farmer who sold his farm, well read the story to know more, but he never found diamonds in his travels around the world.

I just experienced something similar a short time ago.  We rented a cottage on Lake Ontario and I studied the water maps to determine where the big fish would be.  The fishing magazines all said the fish would have gone deep at this time of year and so I went where people said to go.  Because that’s what everyone was saying, and we followed the herd.  We spent the first 3 days of  my week’s holiday running that boat of ours all over the east end of Lake Ontario.  It is a BIG lake, and we spent more time travelling to the “good spots” than fishing.  After 3 days of next to nothing, we changed tactics and started fishing right in front of our cottage.

And that is where we found the fish.  In one 2 hour fishing expedition ( no travel time!) we caught over 25 bass ranging from 2 pounds to the 5 pound lunker that Daniel is holding up in the picture.  The last 3 days of our holiday were the best fishing experiences of my life.

I just can’t believe that I refused to look right under my nose for what I wanted.  And that is exactly what Acres of Daimonds is all about.  I guess it takes time to get the message.

P.S.  And for those of you who are wondering, we only do “catch and release” with our fish and all are released as soon as we give them a kiss and take their picture.  And all fish were released unharmed back to where they came from.
